Mission One: Widow’s Landing


Travel from Galatea to the further reaches of the periphery is, like any space travel journey in the 30th Century, time consuming.

Your new employer gathers you up the next day, and travels by groundcar to the spaceport outside of town. Dropships emerge from the wavering mirages like mushrooms and eggs sitting in a lake, massive spacecraft able to slip the bonds of gravity. You recognize the ship he finally pulls up to as an old (somewhat decrepit) Union-class dropship. Able to carry up to 12 mechs in relative comfort, as well as a pair of aerospace fighters. Able to make 1.5Gs of constant acceleration, and up to 2.5Gs in combat situations, the Union is a standard combat warship seen in service throughout the Inner Sphere and beyond. The ship masses almost 3500 tons, and your employer lovingly informs you that the ship’s name is Bun-bun.

You all stow your gear in the comfortable and spacious double-occupancy crew cabins, but the first thing you notice upon boarding the ship is the stale air heavily laden with the odor of old gym socks. Your employer tells you this is perfectly normal and a quirk of the class. Somehow, you all think instead that this crew uses the ventilation system to stow dirty laundry.

Once everything is in readiness, the ship lifts off with bone-crushing velocity. It is a 12 day journey to the jumpship parked at the nadir jump point below Galatea’s Yellow-white supergiant sun. None of you are well-versed in stellar environmentalism, but you think that a terrestrial planet shouldn’t really be orbiting a supergiant, so perhaps that is why Galatea is such a crapsack world…

It takes several months to actually reach your destination, as you translate across space at 30 light-year jumps, but must wait a week for the jumpcore to recharge from solar energy. But at last you arrive at tiny world on the edge of human settled space, just outside the borders of the Free Worlds League called Hardisey’s Haven.

Out here, worlds that once were brave frontier planets have suffered the most from the Succession Wars. Often cut off from the rest of the universe for extended periods of time, most populations are reduced to subsistence living, with exports rotting in the warehouses for lack of transport. Furthermore, they are prey to pirates and criminals. It is to this world you have all come…
